NY Code + Design Academy to launch dev education program in Philly

Philadelphia is New York Code + Design Academy's first expansion market. The group will start in January with evening classes for beginners and then add an intensive dev bootcamp for summer 2015.

Developer education program New York Code + Design Academy is launching in Philadelphia this January. (And no, they are not changing their name for us.)

Philly is the first expansion city outside of New York for the two-year-old organization. CEO Jeremy Snepar said they chose Philly because of its proximity. That way, his management team can keep a close eye on the Philly program and travel back and forth quickly, when necessary.

NYCDA will first launch a twice-a-week, evening class for beginners. Zach Feldman, NYCDA’s Chief Academic Officer, will teach the 16-week “Web Development 100” class. They’ll be held at The Hub at the Cira Centre at 30th Street. Sign up here. (These classes are not selective and are open to everyone, Snepar said.)

The beginner class costs $3,500.

NYCDA offers discounts for women developers, as well as loans, Snepar said.

By June, the group hopes to launch its 12-week, intensive developer bootcamp, as well as as code camp for youth. They also plan to launch more advanced courses, like one on Angular.js, Snepar said.

As far as developer education programs go in Philly, NYCDA is entering a pretty quiet market. Nonprofit Girl Develop It is the only organization that offers consistent classes on a range of topics, but their classes are less structured than the NYCDA’s 16-week, twice-a-week Web Development 100. They’re also geared toward women (though men are allowed to participate). Dev firms Zivtech and Neomind Labs won a $24,000 city grant to host a free, five week bootcamp this past summer.

NYCDA plans to recruit local teachers (they’ve reached out to Girl Develop It Philly already) and also hire administrative and business development staff as its programming here grows, Snepar said.

The program also offers an employer meet-and-greet at the end of each program. If you want to get in on that, get in touch with NYCDA.
