Use this map to see homicides in Camden since 2003

The map was built by students at Hopeworks 'N Camden, which trains young people for IT careers.

Youth nonprofit Hopeworks ‘N Camden built a map to visualize murders in Camden, N.J., since 2003.

The youth members of Hopeworks used raw data from the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office (rather than an API, or real-time feed of data, which explains why the homicide map is not updated in real time).

Hopeworks, a faith-based organization that trains young people for IT careers by offering them summer jobs, hoped the map would drive those in Camden to act on the city’s high crime rate, Dan Rhoton, Hopeworks’ chief impact director, told NJ.com.

“Year after year, not only does the number of murders stay high, but the locations tend to be the same over and over again,” he said. “How is it helpful to pretend this data doesn’t exist? How is it helpful to just say ‘Oh that’s awful,’ and then just keep going about your day.”
