Philly-region adults spend more time watching TV than they do using the computer, according to a 2012 survey by the Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC) and visualized in an infographic here.

The numbers suggest that access to the Internet and computer usage is still not as prevalent as access to television, despite widespread use in some segments of the population.

Forty two percent of surveyed adults said that they used a computer for less than an hour a day or not at all on average, while just 12 percent said they watched television for less than an hour a day or not at all.

These numbers stayed fairly consistent when it came to surveyed children: 40 percent of children said they used a computer for less than an hour a day or not at all, while almost 16 percent of children said they only watch television for less than an hour a day or not at all.

PHMC surveyed more than 13,000 children and adults in Philadelphia and its surrounding counties for its 2012 Community Health Data Base, a study the organization conducts every two years.

In a previous story on a 2010 PHMC study, we reported that 56 percent of surveyed elderly Philadelphians said they never used the Internet. That percentage was lower (36 percent) in the Philly’s surrounding suburbs.
