Philadelphia GiveCamp: volunteer to build software for nonprofits at this hackathon

Now in its third year, GiveCamp is a weekend-long hackathon where developers and designers volunteer to help nonprofits with their tech needs. Projects can range from building a website to creating a nonprofit's social media presence to building an app to help with data collection.

Many nonprofit teams lack the tech expertise to build software solutions that can help their organizations run more smoothly. That’s where Philadelphia GiveCamp comes in.

Now in its third year, GiveCamp is a weekend-long hackathon where developers and designers volunteer to help nonprofits with their tech needs. Projects can range from building a website to creating a nonprofit’s social media presence to building an app to help with data collection. In short, GiveCamp is looking for any and all kinds of IT expertise — you don’t have to be a coder.

Sign up here. The hackathon is from Jan. 18 – 20, 2013 and will be held at Microsoft‘s Malvern office. (Check out the full Ph.ly/hackathons)

This year, GiveCamp, run by Microsoft and CIGNA, has partnered with United Way to reach out to nonprofits, so the number of participating organizations has doubled from roughly 20 to 40 this year, said event co-organizer Matt Carino. Nonprofits come to the event with a certain tech project in mind, and GiveCamp pairs the nonprofits up with the appropriate developers and designers.
