Everyone’s had that moment. You’re sick of your usual haunts or you have friends coming to town and you need something chic and unusual to do, but you can’t think of a single fresh idea.

For Josh Spears and Dan Sines, that moment inspired Woofound, a mobile app that helps you find activities, food and culture based on your personality then gives you the tools to make plans, either on your own or by inviting friends.

The 15-person Baltimore-based startup launched its iPhone app June 4, 2012 in more than 60 cities including Philadelphia, according to a press release.

“We found that it was frustrating trying to find new things in our city (Baltimore) and overwhelming to figure out what to do when visiting a new city,” cofounder Josh Spears said. “Services do exist that allow people to search for local businesses and events, but we really believe that we’re moving away from traditional search and instead creating an application that supplements people’s lives and allows them have memorable, meaningful experiences while becoming more self-aware of themselves.”

Here’s how the app works.

After creating an account or signing in through Facebook, Woofound asks you to play the “Me or Not Me” personality game that presents 30 activities or foods, like “Spaghetti” or “Skydiving” and asks you to select either “Me” or “Not Me” depending on your preferences.

With it’s flashing images, the test feels a little like participating in a university psych experiment. And for good reason — the personality test was created with the guidance of an in-house psychoanalyst and psychotherapist, according to a press release.

Using your personality results and your location, Woofound recommends a set of restaurants, cultural sites, and activities along with key information, like a description, pricing, and ratings for each suggestion.

Woofound is young, but don’t be fooled by its recent launch. The startup has already raised $1,175,000 in angel investment, predominantly from investors near Baltimore, Spears told Technically Philly.

The app is currently free, but as Woofound expands to more cities across the country, it plans to allow businesses to “claim their profiles” and offer targeted deals, according to a press release..

Although the app is available in cities all over the country, Spears and cofounder Dan Sines, both 24, believe Philly is an important market because it’s big and close to home.

“Because Philly is such a heavily visited city, we’re very excited to see visitors use Woofound to discover personalized experiences outside of the well known attractions,” said Spears. “We believe that Philly has a great many experiences to offer and with Woofound we hope we can shine a light on them while giving visitors a great way to explore the city.”
