Newsstand Association of Philadelphia, meet the region’s seven CBS stations.
Mayor Nutter was on hand Tuesday morning to announce a partnership that will feed news, weather and sports updates from CBS-owned radio and TV outlets onto 24-hour news tickers and flat-screen, high definition televisions outside Center City newsstands, according to a press release.

Philly CBS stations participating in Always On

  1. CBS 3
  2. CW Philly 57
  3. KYW News Radio
  4. 98.1 WOGL
  5. 94 WYSP
  6. SportsRadio 610 WIP
  7. The Big Talker 1210AM WPHT

In addition to content from CBS 3, CW Philly, KYW News Radio and four other radio stations, the tickers and TVs, mounted inside the newsstand, will be able to be used by the city to provide alerts in case of an emergency, including Amber alerts, as coordinated through the city’s Office of Emergency Management.
These digital newsstands follow legislation introduced this summer by City Councilman Frank DiCicco that allowed a much wider array of content and advertising on newsstands. Some newsstands in the city already had LED tickers but the city restricted their messages to products they sold before DiCicco’s legislation and this push, says Andy Burstein, a spokesman for the company that manages the technology.
The announcement came yesterday on the southeastern corner of 20th and Market streets, but 39 newsstands came online in Center City, with plans to reach all 120 members of the city’s newsstand association. It’s being called the CBS Always On newsstand network.
Marketing company Center City Direct is handling the technology, the content and the advertising, which covers the cost of the program. Any additional advertising revenue is split between the newsstands, CCD and CBS, says CCD spokesman Burstein, though the details of the deal were not disclosed.
CCD “uses proprietary, web-enabled technology to broadcast all of the content,” and the CBS affiliates share updated content multiple times a day.
