Event Highlights for September 21-27, 2009

While we can’t absolutely guarantee complete satisfaction from this week’s events (we just don’t have the lawyers for that, yet), we can say that we’re willing to bet there’s something here you’re going to like. While we can’t absolutely guarantee complete satisfaction from this week’s events (we just don’t have the lawyers for that, yet), we can say that we’re willing to bet there’s something here you’re going to like. A lot.
We’ve got mobile. There’s city government. Design superstars? Check. Linux hacking? Mmhmm. Oh, and some 8bit art and music, to boot. That about does it, am I right?
We don’t normally pick faves on the calendar, but we admit our biases when we spot ’em: We strongly believe that the future of Philadelphia’s technology opportunities lie in furthering broadband adoption, and One Web Day Philly‘s Broadband Policy Panel is a great start. Here’s your chance to hear (and jeer) policymakers who are manning the helm. Panel includes City Chief Technology Officer Allan Frank, City Councilman Bill Green, Media Mobilizing Project Co-founder Todd Wolfson and Derek Pew, chair of Boathouse Communication. We’ll be there in an old-timey fedora-adorned journalists’ outfit. Say hi, and read our comprehensive coverage for a leg up.
On, uhm, Monday, we’ve got Mobile Monday, the well put-together Mid-Atlantic chapter of the global organization trying to connect the industry. The focus is on Mobile in the Enterprise; making sure businesses are getting BlackBerries and iPhones in the hands of employees, and how to leverage the fact that afterward, they’ve got instant access to them 28/8. That sound you hear? Yup, that’s your social life waving goodbye to the rest of your day.
PhillyCHI has invited Happy Cog East to talk about their growing and well-known Web design firm. Philadelphia Linux User Group has forged a partnership with Hive 76, and sponsor their first monthly event together. We’re expecting some neat collaborations coming from the Poplar neighborhood, and a whole lot fewer Blue Screens of Death. Last but certainly not least, the chiptunes READY>RUN art and music exhibition started Saturday at University City’s Esther M. Klein Art Gallery, and you’ve got little more than a month to see it. You’re already running out of time. Go. Now.
All events listed on the event calendar are free to attend. Be sure to check our complete calendar for more.

Monday, September 21st: Since we launched, we’ve been hearing good things from many folks in the community about Mobile Monday and the impact it’s had. We had a chance to chat with an organizer recently, and things look pretty serious. Their next event? You need dress pants. Forreals. Why, you ask? They’ve got former City CIO John Carrow, AT&T Mobility’s Cishy Gopalakrishnan, U.S. Army’s Alan Scrime, GlaxoSmithKline’s Charles Goodall and Morgan Lewis Technology law guy Fred Wilf. Yowzas. We’re headed to Macy’s to pick-up some khakis this very afternoon. Please don’t laugh at us if we forget to snip the tags. 5:30 p.m., Center City. RSVP. [view more events]
Tuesday, September 22nd: We’re hooked on this whole Digital Philadelphia thing. We’d like to see that same appreciation from those of you out in the audience, but it’s been hard, we know: the City of Philadelphia has been publicly quiet since May. Now, no more excuses. In conjunction with One Web Daywhich also happens this week and which you can read more about hereAllan Frank and other influential members of Philly’s broadband policy community will discuss our tech future. Don’t miss this one. We won’t. 7:00 p.m., Center City. RSVP. [view more events]
Wednesday, September 23rd: PhillyCHI welcomes Happy Cog East on Wednesday, a premier U.S. Web design firm based right here in ‘lil old Philly-a-delphia which recently acquired California-based Airbag Industries, another design leader. Members of the crew will lead 10 minute conversations about client relations, project management, project momentum, visual design and information architecture. Sounds solid, but can we get a location update on this one, guys? 6:00 p.m., TBD. RSVP. [view more events]
Thursday, September 24th: Philadelphia Linux User Group (PLUG) has teamed up with Hive 76, Philly’s newest hackspace and Hacktory spin-off, to co-sponsor the meetup group in Hive’s fresh digs in the Poplar neighborhood. Nothing special this particular evening, though we expect a more polished agenda and some cool hackollaborations on the way. (You like that word play, don’t you?) 7:00 p.m., Poplar. RSVP. All Week: We’re admittedly hype on Philly’s chiptunes scene, so we’re psyched to see the vintage game artists get a little love at READY>RUN exhibition at University City’s Esther M. Klein Art Gallery, which we recently profiled. The gallery, which features the music and art of locals like Alex Bond, Will Lindsay, Joey Mariano, Don Miller and Drexel’s Music & Entertainment Technology Laboratory, along with a few folks from the 67th Ward, runs until November. University City. DETAILS. [view more events]
If you have an event that you think we should be listing, email us or fill out our submission form for best results. We promise that no submission falls in to the contact form netherworld.
