• AI healthtech startup Abridge raised $300 million from two major investors, nearly doubling its valuation to $5.3 billion since February. The funding will support its partnerships with over 150 health systems nationwide. [Technical.ly]
• The Heinz Endowments, a major funder of economic mobility efforts in Pittsburgh, has accused a former IT manager of embezzling nearly $1 million. He was recently indicted on five counts of wire fraud and four counts of money laundering in federal court. [TribLIVE]
• Following Gecko Robotics’ recent leap to unicorn status, InnovatePGH’s Sean Luther says Pittsburgh is now rivaling Miami in its number of billion-dollar startups. He adds that 20 to 30 local companies could be next, each already valued at $100 million or more. [Axios/Technical.ly]
• Both Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh, along with a handful of other universities, will study AI’s impact on workers and the labor market using a $1.6 million grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. [CMU]
• Still using Windows 10? Despite Microsoft’s push to upgrade, many older PCs can continue running just fine without Windows 11. Experts say security risks are real, but the urgency to upgrade is overstated. [Technical.ly]
• The US Department of Defense has renewed its contract with Carnegie Mellon University to run the Software Engineering Institute for another five years.
