Technical Product Owner – Web

Evolve the Client Experience

Help lead Vanguard’s secure site, Vanguard.com, focusing on evolving the overall client experience and underlying architecture. Drive modernizing the web experience, reimagining, and rebuilding the information architecture and navigation to improve our clients’ overall ease of use and effectiveness. You will lead foundational pages and tools which make up the core of Vanguard’s secure site, with the goal of improving access for clients and elevating the experience. You will join a team of product owners who are accountable for directing and prioritizing agile teams’ activities, based on a relentless focus on client needs and a strong understanding of business drivers.

In this role, you will…

  • Lead elements of the web channel, including parts of the web platform, by owning the strategic vision and roadmap, with a deep understanding of the underlying product(s) and associated business areas.
  • Manage an agile team passionate about enhancing features within the web experience and directs production support activities.
  • Prioritize the team’s work to meet key business goals and deliverable dates.
  • Embrace the test and learn mentality to drive iterative improvements to the client experience.
  • Accountable for key metrics of digital channel experience (e.g., NPS, NFS, CX index) and channel performance (e.g., availability, response time).
  • Write and deliver business requirements through user stories to the dev team.
  • Ensure quality software and experiences are delivered.
  • Ensure navigation and findability are effective by living and breathing the end to end site map and client flows.
  • Ensure web experience and infrastructure is continuously modernized and that the latest tools and capabilities are available.
  • Product manage and optimize self-directed tools and key foundational pages.
  • Work collaboratively with CX Journeys to further enable the web channel for key client journeys.
  • Continuously audit the site looking for opportunities for improvements on UI, usability, content, benchmark scenarios, and diligently enhancing and simplifying all parts of the experience.
  • Challenge the business to drive for innovative solutions; “think out of the box” and ensure best in class solution designs. Embrace and drive experimentation to measure and implement integrated and proven solutions.
  • Create, maintain, and employ various qualitative and quantitative analysis techniques to continually improve the user experience.
  • Build and maintain strong business support from team members to promote a consistent approach to decisions/impacts and client propositions.
  • Work with the team to continually optimize the efficiency of our agile implementation and delivery.

With that in mind, the Client Experience & Digital (CXD) Retail sub-division was created in 2019 to enhance our clients’ experiences and differentiate Vanguard from competitors that adopt aspects of our low-cost investment philosophy. We create meaningful world-class experiences that exceed client expectations, positioning Vanguard as the trusted financial partner and industry disruptor. These roles will join the broader CXD Advice family, supporting the RIG advice engine.

What it takes

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. Graduate degree preferred.
  • 8 or more years’ work experience, including 3+ years of leading large cross-functional/cross-regional teams on major organizational projects
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results while working in cross-functional environment
  • Demonstrated experience with facilitation, situational awareness, conflict resolution, continual improvement, empowerment, and increasing transparency.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing and executing Agile principles with strong digital and technical skills.
  • Demonstrated experience and deep understanding of user experience best practices.

What kinds of things did Vanguard do for employees to ease the transition to working from home?

At the start of the pandemic, Vanguard made a big push for employees to get comfortable working from home. It sent new desk chairs and office equipment to any employee that needed it, and offered a child relief policy (a 6-8 week plan at 50% salary) and expanded sick leave to help employees adjust to their new work-life balance. Additionally, they paid out performance bonuses two months early this year.

When we return to work, or what we call “the next normal,” the plan is to offer employee support in a variety of ways: How to increase your impact, be an inclusive team member, work smarter and optimize your work experience. It will also offer support groups for emotional, physical and financial well-being, in addition to the already existing personal and professional specialty programs like Vanguard’s Technology Leadership Program geared towards grads who want to develop their technical expertise, and resources for continuing education and reducing student loan debt.

How has COVID-19 affected hiring?

The biggest question we get from remote tech candidates is will they have to relocate when everyone eventually returns to the office. Many are hoping to work from where they are forever. Because our tech teams do so much work together in the lab, once we go back, we will need everyone to work from our office in Malvern, PA.

In terms of the hiring process, everything has gone virtual, so it’s much faster than our previous process of scheduling and flying people in for interviews. Regardless of how we do it, our goal is always to fill a role within 55 days from start to finish.

What qualities do you look for in tech job candidates?

We look for innovative, solution-driven developers who understand the limits of the latest technology and are capable of coming up with ideas and products that haven't been created yet. On the other side of the coin, we want those same people to have good business acumen, project management skills and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders.

So it’s a bit of both worlds. You need to be able to write code and then have the soft skills to explain your work to stakeholders with a range of technical understanding.

What is the pace like at Vanguard?

The technical team at Vanguard works in an agile work environment, so they work quickly and intelligently. Over the last couple of years, Vanguard has enabled a robust continuous delivery system where folks can get new feature updates into production in less than 15 minutes to begin testing in live product environments, where in years past it would take months to get something into production.
