Technically Media, a local niche news and events organization best known for its local tech news network, social impact site and annual event series Philly Tech Week, is hiring a Lead Reporter for its Philly site.

The Lead Reporter is our organization’s primary point of contact for sources and community members of the Philadelphia technology and entrepreneurship community. We use beat business reporting and community journalism to convene this collection of technologists and entrepreneurs, and you must be our chief connector and narrator.

The ideal candidate has experience in and a willingness to experiment with new media and is interested in supporting and learning from a community journalism enterprise — an organization building a business model around helping make connections, including jobs, education and more. Our newsroom pledges to be accurate, relevant and productive for the communities we serve. Plus, as a small, growing news media startup, we’re probably more fun than your traditional editorial role.

This role will report directly to the Managing Editor. With the support of freelance and guest contributors, we aim to publish 3-5 items per day in Philadelphia. This role might report 3-4 of those items of various lengths and story types, while following other story ideas.

This role will operate out of Technically Media offices in the Curtis Center building of the Washington Square neighborhood in Philadelphia.

The person in this role is expected to spend three quarters of their time interviewing, writing and reporting and one quarter doing supplementary tasks such as supporting strategy, social media engagement and meeting with internal staff.

This is a full-time salaried position. This position will start on roughly Monday, May 20, 2019.

Expected responsibilities

  • Help establish and implement overall editorial strategy in the Philly market, led by the Managing Editor.
  • Work closely with Managing Editor to execute that overall editorial strategy, including its news product, directory, social media properties and the like.
  • Grow and support an audience of local technologists and entrepreneurs.
  • Publish 3-4 items a day, with a variety of independently reported stories and limited aggregation.
  • File at least one monthly larger enterprise report (aka “big headlines”), including evergreen, investigative or other deeply sourced pieces about the community.
  • Prioritize information sharing between the editorial, events and business teams to highlight potential partners, speakers, venues, sponsors and contributors.
  • Attend and speak at relevant events to raise awareness of our work.
  • Participate in and support social media strategy for the Philly market, including engagement and social sharing on places like the market Twitter handle, community Facebook groups, reddit and our public Slack group.


This position is ideal for someone with some editorial experience and interests but seeking something that allows for growth in beat reporting skills and exploration of nontraditional story types. Bonus points for being excited by local or niche news specifically.

Candidates should likely possess the following qualifications:

  • A few years of writing and reporting experience 
  • An interest in how local communities — specifically tech and innovation communities — are shaping the future of cities
  • An excitement to experiment with voice in your writing
  • Obsessive view of AP style, grammatical and syntax standards and the like
  • Be excited by our mission and want to represent it on a citywide stage: We’re proud of what we do for our communities and are passionate about exploring how we fund our work by serving those very same communities.
  • An understanding of online content management systems and social media is required. Experience with WordPress or other open source content management systems is desirable.

  • This is a full-time, salaried position.
  • This role is based out of Technically Media’s Philadelphia headquarters.
  • This role reports to the Managing Editor.
  • This role must be available to support breaking news and relevant event production, though other hours are flexible and we celebrate work-life balance, including the option to work from home when needed.
  • Though results matter most and Technically Media prides itself on flexibility, as a guide, this role might expect to work roughly 45 hours a week.
