Technically Media, a local community journalism and events organization, is hiring an Events Manager. The Events Manager will be part of our “Philadelphia Initiatives” team, which is charged with producing Philly Tech Week (which will celebrate its 10th annual May 1-9, 2020) and a small events portfolio for our social impact news site (Note, though there are points of collaboration, this role is not directly involved with our multi-market events.)

This is a leadership role within the organization, owning a budget and public-facing committees, and therefore comes with responsibilities to influence strategy, including our highly anticipated 10th annual Philly Tech Week. This role, which has an events coordinator direct report and is part of a five-person unit within our company, is being filled with a specific focus on our active planning for PTW20.

You are a confident and detail-driven team leader who is passionate about convening smart people changing local communities. You are an experienced events leader who knows how to build and empower a team to achieve goals and grow ticket revenue and sponsorship opportunities in new ways.

You are ready to take over a well-developed events strategy and excited to find new ways to improve, iterate and excel. You will lead and execute this strategy, but you’re also not afraid to get your hands dirty. Under your watch, not a single detail is overlooked.

You understand that great events are built on community. You’re motivated by the impact you can have on speakers, sponsors and community partners by helping them plug into meaningful opportunities at events. You are able to get creative to meet lower budget goals and also recognize when there’s an opportunity to invest for a greater return.

You’re psyched to lead a small team that’s part of a growing organization. You have a lot of lessons to share, but you also want to learn. You know how to lead a team under pressure, you know how to do it with humility, and you can have fun doing it. You want to organize events that you believe in, helping to connect people in communities of purpose.


As Philadelphia Initiatives Events Manager, you will oversee and produce two event event types, amounting to 10-12 events a year:

  1. Philly Tech Week — Our best-known event series takes place each spring, including a large outdoor kickoff, 750+ person closing party and massive coordination between other events from partners and our own. The top priority for this Events Manager is to support our year-long planning for PTW20 and beyond.
  2. Generocity — Under this brand, we host annual impact jobs fair INTER/VIEW, a professional development series for nonprofit leaders called Tech in the Commons and occasional client-supported custom events.

We have a strong foundation. We need someone who is excited about compelling programming, creative budget-making, event staging and more. You should be someone who eagerly attends other events, for work and for fun, always seeking inspiration for clever ideas for convening.



The person in this role can expect to spend about half of his or her time overseeing and executing the core events strategy and team while developing new and stronger products, a quarter improving the sales and budget strategy and processes to meet event and quarterly goals, and a final quarter of his or her time executing event related logistics.

  • Serve as an internal and external organizational leader, representative and champion.
  • Execute all events with assistance from Events, Business and Editorial department staff. Duties include: venue selection, content and programming development, coordinating pricing, creating effective collateral across internal and partner marketing channels, assisting sales staff, managing budgets and overseeing general logistics.
  • Be ultimately responsible for the Philadelphia Initiatives events portfolio, made of Philly Tech Week and Generocity-branded events, including some client-backed custom events and projects. This includes managing their budgets, deliverables and staffing plans.
  • Support and empower the Technically Media Events Coordinator
  • Support the development of sponsorship packages, including sourcing ideas from sponsors and creative solutions to meet business goals
  • Interface with clients, both sponsors of our branded events and their custom events
  • Support the pricing and proposal creation of Studio projects, including participation in client kickoff meetings directly or by overseeing selected teammate.
  • Oversee event-specific sponsor deliverables by tracking event staff and CRM use.
  • Support the creation of event-specific impact report creation.
  • Oversee the use of subject matter expert committee and advisory meetings for event programming creation.
  • Effectively liaise with venue, speakers and partners to communicate the information necessary to successfully execute event needs.
  • Requests all special licenses’/permits/insurance documents.
  • Support the marketing and promotion of our events, with our Marketing and Partnerships Director
  • Project Manager for the Philly Tech Week website development, leading RFP outreach for future creative partners/vendors. (The PTW website is licensed for use by Baltimore Innovation Week)



This position is ideal for someone who has an interest in bringing together people in Philadelphia, from the region and beyond. Candidates should likely possess the following qualifications:

  • 5-10 years of events experience expected
  • Comfort in the language and culture of business strategy, particularly one rooted in online publishing and technology conference/events.
  • Long-term strategic planner; results-driven, superior cross-group collaboration, communication skills and organizational agility.
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals at all levels of an organization and with external clients, including partners, sponsors and attendees.
  • Experience with creating and managing relationships with as well as negotiating with venues, speakers, sponsors and partners.
  • Comfort in working with various partners to identify and execute balance of expectations, priorities and opportunities that, ultimately, encourage collaboration.
  • Comfort seeking partnerships, trades and barters.
  • Experience in event marketing across multiple online platforms.
  • Excitement by the idea of a small, passionate and energetic team, which comes with great flexibility and impact, along with fast-moving change and high, competitive expectations.
  • Knowledge of and interest in innovation and impact issues is preferred but not required.
  • Interest in local journalism or media preferred, but not required.
  • An understanding of online content management systems, comparable blog software, and social media applications is required.
  • Computer skills: strong with Apple’s and Google’s suite of products (particularly Google Docs) required; comfort with CRM, especially Hubspot, preferred but not required
  • Comfort with social media tools like Twitter, Instagram, Slack and the like.


  • Work out of our Philadelphia-based offices (Washington Square).
  • Must be available for limited evenings and weekends as required for events and other activities, though other hours are flexible.


This is a full-time salaried position to be paid between $50,000 and $60,000. This role includes support for health insurance, which includes vision and dental benefits. We offer 15 days of Paid Time Off to start (with an additional day accrued for each year of service), plus 9 paid holidays, available flex time, a flexible and fun work environment, a monthly IT stipend and access to a company 401K plan.
