Technical.ly, a news organization that connects and challenges a community of technologists and entrepreneurship invested in where they live, is hiring a market editor. Our organization’s vision: We believe innovation should come from anyone anywhere — to ensure all communities thrive.

If you’re  passionate about local news and economic mobility, including entrepreneurship, tech skills and the future of work, and if you want to contribute to a close-knit, fast-moving team covering tech and innovation in US cities while exploring the latest news-gathering tools and implementing audience-centric best practices, this job could be for you.

Position Summary

Above all else, we're hiring for someone who wants to develop great stories, both for experienced technologists and entrepreneurs, who rely on Technical.ly to stay tethered to where they live, and for those aspiring to tech careers and entrepreneurship, who rely on Technical.ly to wayfind through local resources. We meet them where they are, including our popular newsletters, our reader Slack community and on social media.

To develop stories, you need a nose for news, an eagerness to work with reporters and contributors, and a passion to serve our community and audience.

The ideal candidate will excel at editing stories to consistently, quickly and accurately deliver valuable local business news. You should be excited to follow the latest startup trends, find connections between tech and public policy, celebrate regional business successes and examine missteps or failures, think about how to boost economic mobility, and help make entrepreneurship more accessible. Bonus points for being inspired by efforts to build a sustainable model for impactful local journalism.

Our independent newsroom aims to write both for and about an informed audience to help them navigate their careers and understand the economic trends shaping their work. The goal is to make communities better, smarter and more engaged. Plus, as a small news org with a startup mentality, we’re probably more fun than your traditional editorial employer.

You’ll be successful if you lead impactful coverage and delivery of must-read daily emails filled with news, information and perspective. You should have at least 3 years experience editing in a newsroom environment, knowledge of online content management systems and social media platforms, a willingness to experiment with new formats and tools, and a desire to support and learn from an experienced journalistic enterprise.

The market editor reports to Technical.ly’s editorial director and works closely with our geographically distributed newsroom. There’s regular collaboration and coordination daily via Slack and other project management tools, as well as weekly and monthly via virtual meetings, some with the entire Technical.ly team. We also come together in person a few times per year.

Interested? Send an email to Technical.ly Editorial Director Danya Henninger at danya@technical.ly. Please attach your resume, and include a letter in the body of the email explaining why you’re the right person for this role, along with 2-3 references and links to examples of your work. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, so the sooner you apply, the better.

  • Manage a team of 3-5 full-time reporters to meet newsroom goals and deadlines, including daily articles and newsletters from each market you oversee, as well as recurring monthly features
