Linode is looking for a DevOps Engineer to join the Product Development team. As a member of our team, your primary responsibilities will include maintaining our product infrastructure and improving automation to deliver services to our customers. In addition, you’ll be responsible for advising developers on best practices. As a DevOps Engineer in Product Development, you’ll have an opportunity to get your hands dirty at all levels of our stack. You’ll help maintain core Internet infrastructure for a cloud computing provider across globally distributed facilities.

Technologies

You don’t have to have experience with all of these, but you should have experience with some of them and an interest to learn others:

  • Python, Golang, and Bash
  • SaltStack, Terraform
  • Experience with Relational Databases
  • Docker containers, Kubernetes
  • Linux systems and virtualization

Expectations

  • Experience with running mission-critical Linux servers via the command line
  • A history of automating and modernizing processes throughout the development lifecycle
  • Strong knowledge of best practices including expertise in automation and security
  • A proven track record of solving complex problems

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with monitoring tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch
  • Experience with the Hashicorp stack, e.g. Vault, Consul, Terraform, Nomad
  • Experience with credential management systems
  • Experience working in a cloud hosting environment
  • Advanced knowledge of Jenkins
  • Some experience working with Perl and Artifactory

  • Competitive salary: It all begins with fair compensation. We believe in paying people well and rewarding those who go the extra mile. The compensation range for this position is between $70,000 to $120,000 based on a full-time schedule. The salary could vary outside of this range based on your specific skills and experience. Employees may also qualify for a bonus on top of base salary depending on the company and individual performance.

What does Linode look for in prospective employees?

What about technical skills?

Linode employees, especially those on the support team, often come to the company from a variety of non-technical backgrounds. That said, technical aptitude is a must. All employees pick up the Linux command line. The work we do is specific to Linux.

Technologists should know that while historically we’ve been a Python shop leveraging Flask, Django, and React, a lot of our next-gen systems are built with Go and Kubernetes. On top of that, we use SaltStack for configuration management, Docker for containerization and Jenkins for continuous integration. We don’t care so much about years of experience with particular languages, frameworks, and libraries as we care about passion, aptitude for learning new technologies, and eagerness to work with the best tools for each job.

We run a six-week training program for anyone new going into support and there's a two week mentorship after that before you even answer a call. It helps grow a strong support team,  but it also creates a wonderful resource for the rest of the company whether moving into engineering, marketing or technical documentation.

What does a typical day of work at Linode look and feel like?

When it comes down to it, you can and should have a good time working at Linode.
