Company Culture Coverage

As a Software Engineer on Inspire’s Data Platforms and Services team, you will build, maintain, and improve the service layer that provides critical data to Inspire’s internal and customer-facing applications. We take a product-driven, agile approach to our platform, driving measurable growth and meaningful outcomes every single sprint. We build efficient, scalable processes in a distributed service-oriented ecosystem leveraging powerful code frameworks and repeatable patterns to solve real problems for stakeholders and customers.

  1. Developing and maintaining scalable APIs in Ruby & Python
  2. Distributed systems engineering and service-oriented architecture implementation on cloud infrastructure
  3. Communicating with product owners and stakeholders, leveraging your ability to translate between the domains of business problems and technical solutions
  4. Team-oriented development: building modular & re-usable tools, writing maintainable code, owning technical and business documentation, sharing best practices and mentoring junior developers

  • Maintain and grow Inspire’s core data services — including forecasting, pricing, sales targeting and operational support — to support new product features and incremental product lines
  • Lead refactors of legacy components to independent services, gathering requirements and designing efficient, scalable implementations in an array of cloud-based (AWS) technologies
  • Partner with Sales, Operations, and other business stakeholders to design and deliver new data-driven features and applications
  • Partner with other engineering teams to build scalable integrations into an ecosystem of business functions and customer solutions

  • Technical competency – You’re comfortable in all kinds of systems and interfaces and owning the software development lifecycle. You’ve mastered the fundamentals of software engineering and have an appetite for experimentation in modern cloud-based infrastructures and services.
  • Problem-Solving Mentality – You get excited about digging into complexity, asking questions and learning more, and aren’t put off by new kinds of problems or new domains of solutions.
  • Services & Systems Orientation – You think about how an ecosystem of applications works together above the details of any one point solution. You’re able to choose the right size implementation for the day, balancing known requirements with future opportunities and risks.
  • Big-picture awareness – You focus on people & impact. You understand the importance of context, and you address the business problem in addition to the technical one.

  • Must Have
    • 3-6+ years of experience as a professional software engineer/developer
    • Application & API development and maintenance experience in Ruby or Python
    • Mastery of the software development lifecycle, including environment management, testing and deployment patterns
    • Familiarity with service-oriented architecture patterns, including containerized development & deployment
  • Nice to Have
    • Experience with key frameworks: Docker, Kubernetes,
    • Experience refactoring a monolith to services
    • Experience with a membership-oriented product
    • Contextual work with geographical or prospect targeting systems
    • Contextual work with campaign and experiment management software
    • Direct or indirect team leadership experience preferred

What are some examples of projects Inspire employees are working on?

Everyone is or becomes a full-stack developer. The company is very product-focused. Technologists are tasked with developing next generation consumer products that are easy to use and help members better understand their energy consumption. The team is currently working on Inspire’s consumer technology platform, which is written with a mix of Ruby and Angular 2, and using Ionic to create native mobile apps. Inspire’s tech team is constantly unlocking data that helps members optimize their energy usage, increase their home's value and decrease their carbon footprint.

How does Inspire encourage learning on the job?

Developers at Inspire love technology and are driven by their curiosity. It’s not a requirement to be an expert in the languages and tools we use, but it is a requirement to strive to get better at technology every day. At Inspire, coders get to learn and work with new technologies throughout the stack, whether it’s on the front-end, building API’s or working with our data scientists.

How does the company’s mission impact its technologists?

In the best way. Coders have opinions, and those opinions are welcomed at Inspire. While technical skills are important, Inspire is looking for technologists who want to feel a sense of purpose when they go to work everyday. Inspire’s dev team brings the company’s mission to life in everything it builds. At the end of the day, developers are asking themselves the same question their colleagues in other departments are asking: Is this going to help us achieve our mission?

What does the company do to loosen things up?

The drive to create a larger impact on this world is very real, but employees don’t take themselves too seriously. Every employee is an Avenger fighting climate change. Every employee also has his or her own story about their first “Cupcake Smash,” an internal birthday tradition that features an Avenger cape and a cupcake eating competition (could you eat a cupcake in one bite?). That is, unless you’re CEO and founder Patrick Maloney, who donned a pair of goggles and plunged his head into a bucket of water to bob for his birthday cupcake.

What is every-day company culture like?

Avengers will tell you that company culture is a big draw, and like everything else about Inspire, the company mission is a big part of it. The team is driven by the collective desire to create something new — to test, learn and solve the tough problems. Inspire’s staff is young, energized, and motivated by purpose-driven work. Avengers are encouraged to learn new skills and put them to the test. Outside of work, team members can often be found together, whether it be at a happy hour or office yoga session. Side projects are encouraged, and several employees use their free time to build something unrelated to work or engage with environmental justice organizations.
