Technically Media, a digital media company best known for its local news network Technical.ly, is hiring a Market Editor, which serves as beat reporter and editorial point of contact for its D.C. site.

We’re seeking someone who is eager to work a beat, file daily and build a network of sources in the region’s emerging business community. The D.C. staffer is responsible for community coverage, which primarily includes reporting but can also include the editing of outside contributors, including guest posts and freelance pieces.

This person with exceptional news and relationship-building instincts will work with the Technical.ly Editor-in-Chief to comprehensively report on the early stage tech, entrepreneurship and innovation communities of the D.C. area. The D.C. Market Editor will also work closely with our established Baltimore Market Editor.

At Technical.ly, we believe that journalism is a necessary act for strengthening any community. Our mission is to use news coverage to grow an audience of technologists and entrepreneurs inspired by local impact, and to bring them to action. The D.C. Market Editor will focus their reporting on the leaders of growing companies and the smartest technologists that support such companies. We fund our work by making connections in our community, through events, storytelling and services, particularly with talent acquisition strategies. Much of our most impactful work includes helping connect jobseekers and employers.

The ideal candidate will excel in cultivating source relationships to consistently deliver valuable local business news, quickly and accurately. You should have experience in and a willingness to experiment with new media, and an interest in supporting and learning from a journalism organization that gives value to all community members, including readers, event attendees and sponsors. Plus, as a small, growing media startup, we’re probably more fun than your traditional editorial role.

This is a full-time position with a salary ranging from $42,000 to $48,000, depending on experience. Staff members receive access to our company healthcare and dental plans, a 401k plan, a monthly IT stipend for our bring-your-own-device work environment and other related benefits.

The Market Editor will report directly to the Technical.ly Editor-in-Chief and work closely with our distributed newsroom, in particular our Baltimore Market Editor. Though our editorial team is situated within the communities we report on, our newsroom is active daily via Slack, and we additionally find regular opportunities to work together in person across our markets. With the support of freelance and guest contributors, we aim to publish three items per day on our D.C. site. This role will likely report the bulk of those 15 items per week, while overseeing guest and freelance contributors for the rest, with independence on determining that mix. In addition to directly reporting to the Technical.ly Editor in Chief, the D.C. Market Editor will work closely with the Baltimore Market Editor, as these markets work in conjunction to cover the entire DMV region. There will be regular collaboration and daily coordination.

This role will operate out of the Technically Media satellite office at 1776 DC. Limited travel to company headquarters in Philadelphia may be required, in addition to opportunities to connect with our expanding market footprint.

The person in this role is expected to spend roughly 80 percent of their time reporting in D.C., 10 percent editing other contributors and 10 percent doing supplementary tasks like supporting strategy, editorial products, social media engagement and administrative work.

Expected Responsibilities:

  • Help establish and implement overall Technical.ly editorial strategy, led by the Technically Media Editorial Director and the Technical.ly Editor-in-Chief. This includes editorial products charged with connecting job seekers and employers.
  • Work closely with Technical.ly Editor-in-Chief to execute overall editorial strategy, including its news product, directory, social media properties and the like.
  • Grow and support an audience of local technologists and entrepreneurs.
  • Oversee editorial products that support our business strategy of connecting growing companies and technical talent, including the realLIST, Editorial Calendar, On the Market, Power Moves and/or other initiatives.
  • Work with the Product team to schedule disclosed sponsored-content, ensuring that each piece upholds Technical.ly editorial standards.
  • Work with the Lead Reporter in Baltimore to edit items where needed.
  • Manage a freelance budget to supplement community coverage in the D.C. market.
  • Solicit and develop guest and community contributors to meet editorial goals.
  • File at least one monthly, larger enterprise report, including evergreen, investigative or another deeply sourced piece about the community.
  • Prioritize information sharing between the editorial, events and business teams to highlight potential partners, speakers, venues, sponsors and contributors.
  • Attend and speak at relevant events to raise awareness of our work across Technical.ly markets.
  • Participate in and support social media strategy for your Technical.ly market, including on Twitter, community Facebook groups, Reddit and our public Slack group.

The position is ideal for someone passionate about beat reporting and source development. Bonus points for being inspired by technology and our efforts to build a sustainable model for impactful local journalism. At its core, this is a reporting role, but we’ve found our most successful editorial hires have been those who want to gain some editing experience, hence the inclusion of some of that. You will be sole full-time editorial hire in D.C., meaning you must have a drive to be the most connected person in a community. There are ample opportunities for such growth in our organization.

Candidates should likely possess the following qualifications:

  • 1–3 years of reporting experience.
  • Exceptional collaboration and communication skills.
  • An obsessive hunger to be the best-sourced reporter on a beat.
  • Passionate view of AP style, and grammar and syntax standards. Must have an opinion on the Oxford comma.
  • Empathy to ask the “why” of our coverage, an instinct to know when publicly critical reporting provides the most value. Our mission is to make a community better, smarter and more engaged.
  • Interest in local and niche communities and serving them with journalism.
  • Interest in sustainable news by balancing journalism ethics and business model.
  • An understanding of online content management systems, comparable blog software and social media applications is required. Experience with WordPress or other open-source content management systems is desirable.
  • Knowledge of and interest in local and national tech, entrepreneurship and innovation communities.
  • Knowledge of and interest in sustainable business models for news organizations. Making a sustainable news business alongside editorial mission must excite you.

Other information:

  • Position includes base salary.
  • Position includes health benefits, including primary care, vision and dental.
  • Position includes access to a 401k plan.
  • Regular directional feedback from our Editor-in-Chief and collaborative newsroom.
  • Our company hosts an annual Team Retreat every June and a vision-building annual All-Team Day every December.
  • Position includes Bring-Your-Own-Device reimbursement.
  • Position is based out of our D.C. satellite office, a prominent coworking space, and flexibility to work from other relevant locations. Similarly, this role will have the opportunity to work from our Philadelphia headquarters and our Baltimore satellite office.
