14 West, an Agora Company, is looking for a Junior Database Administrator to join our DBA Team, focusing on managing and maintaining our relational data infrastructure.  This role is based on The Agora’s main campus, where every day roughly 1300 people work as part of the organization.  Set in Baltimore City’s historic and cultural hub called Mount Vernon, there is no shortage of opportunities to feed your imagination there.  The neighborhood is also home to institutions such as the Walters Art Museum, the Peabody Library, and Baltimore School for the Arts.  The Mount Vernon campus is also rich in diversity and offers access to an abundance of unique restaurants, retailers, galleries, and nightlife destination.

The ideal candidate for this position is disciplined, able to adapt and learn new skills quickly, and has experience with industry standard relational database platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL/MariaDB, and MongoDB.

  • Assist the database administration team in monitoring, managing, and troubleshooting our extensive Microsoft SQL Server environment.
  • Assist our in-house Dev Ops team with performing administrative functions on an evolving suite of open source, NoSQL and big data platforms, including MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Hadoop, and other emerging data management platforms.
  • Support our network of affiliate companies with a wide variety of data-related projects and initiatives.
  • Provide database optimization and implement best practices, including query and index tuning, performance-related forensics, and general auditing.
  • Assist the Information Security team in troubleshooting issues where data platforms are involved.
  • Be willing to adapt to change, learn new skills as needed, and stay up to date on industry progress and standards.
  • Maintain proper documentation and develop / adhere to current management procedures.
  • Provide after-hours or weekend systems and / or applications support, primarily as part of an on-call rotation.


  • Experience and strong skills, preferably 1-2+ years, with managing Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Some experience/familiarity with other industry-standard database technologies, such as MySQL/MariaDB, MongoDB or PostgreSQL.
  • Adept at learning and applying new technologies to solve new problems.
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal.
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Collaborative in nature and comfortable working in a team.


  • Familiarity with or desire to learn big data technologies, such as the Hadoop suite.
  • Familiarity with or desire to learn cloud-based relational data technologies, such as Microsoft Azure or SQL in AWS.
  • Experience with general IT systems troubleshooting at the operating system and physical server/networking level.

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 3 years of relevant work experience.

Director of Development, Cory Chambers knows of this first hand. “My personal story is they gave me an opportunity when no one else would,” he said. 

When Chambers graduated from college, he couldn’t find an engineering job. He felt that no one would take a chance on a junior developer.

But 14 West did.

After he was hired, Chambers was promoted to a management position within nine months. And the company asked him how they could find and coach more junior developers like him. “At the rate in which we’ve grown, I now manage a team of about nine or 10 people and we’re still adding to that,” he said.

14 West also hosts an extensive internship program, wherein 26 to 28 interns come in for orientation each May. The internship program includes big outings such as sailing, team building activities, and real world experience in an elite and growing enterprise.

It’s a demonstrated set of values — focused on people — that extends to the company’s philanthropic approach, as well.
