14 West is looking for a Cloud Infrastructure Engineer to support our growing Server Operations team. The Cloud Infrastructure Engineer will be responsible for the design, build, maintenance, and troubleshooting of public cloud infrastructure and related systems. This position has a strong focus on the networking, security, server, and storage side of the cloud compute technologies. As a member of the Cloud Operations teams you will collaborate with other highly skilled technical staff who are responsible for the engineering of cloud compute, storage, backup and OS / application layers of hosting infrastructure and internal systems. This collaboration will also have a focus on integrating with the Information Security team to ensure all public cloud resources will be deployed with a focus on security first.  This hands-on technical role will require daily interaction with cloud compute platforms and their related systems.

  • Leverage extensive knowledge of the following areas to create and deliver cloud computing solutions to meet client objectives: Enterprise Architecture, Integration Strategy and Roadmap, Service Oriented Architecture, Vendor Selection, Business Process Management, and Systems Architecture
  • Understanding of hardware virtualization (servers, storage, and network) and leveraging that knowledge to build on existing investments in virtualization and integrate seamlessly with public cloud providers
  • Act as the technical representative to collaborate with technical and non-technical individuals to provide architecture recommendations for infrastructure in public cloud spaces, and assist in the definition, build, and delivery of solutions utilizing that infrastructure
  • Ensure technical delivery of public infrastructure components to the organization; Including proper coverage, alerting, and responsiveness to issues; quality and completeness of communication and documentation; ownership of escalated items; and adherence to ITIL/ITSM best practices
  • Direct and support public cloud infrastructure development.  Participate in the planning /architecture of cloud-based systems and recommend infrastructure to support delivery of those systems, working collaboratively with other functional areas
  • Research and adapt cloud infrastructure into existing or new solutions, coordinating efforts with other teams within the organization
  • Plan, execute and assist with ongoing cloud platform migrations with legacy software applications
  • Maintain a strong understanding of emerging public cloud technologies and their corresponding value to business strategy and product offering. Stay up-to-date on the latest hosting / cloud service provider architecture / design methodologies, marketing and technology trends in the hosting and cloud services space.
  • Assist with the build effort on new public / hybrid cloud compute and storage infrastructure from proof of concept through production launch and ongoing maintenance.
  • Plan, execute, and assist with leveraging public cloud providers, primarily AWS, to provide IaaS for all business units.  Provide the same level of delivery, integration, and support that business units are accustomed to in any requested cloud provider.
  • Lead, develop, and maintain effective real-time monitoring systems to ensure proactive responses to public cloud events and maintain up time standards according to published SLA’s
  • Work with internal teams and business stakeholders to define administration and policy guidelines for public cloud hosting, specifically addressing the following areas; security, change management, deployment frameworks, and PCI/GDPR compliance.
  • Utilize the Agile framework to drive deliverables and ensure all work is completed within a timely and effective manner.
  • Provide cost analysis, modeling, and recommendation, including best practices, for cloud hosting costs.
  • Work with business stakeholders to define best path possible for public cloud data ingress/egress, ensuring cost effectiveness
  • Create and maintain strong vendor relationships. Negotiate cost effective contracts and renewals as needed.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience working in AWS, particularly around the core infrastructure components like VPC/Networking and IAM.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in designing, building, and deploying scalable and secure cloud-based solution architectures.
  • Strong foundation in leveraging the AWS Well Architected Framework and AWS Shared Responsibility Model to architect and build solutions in AWS.
  • Experience creating CloudFormation templates to develop and deploy Infrastructure-as-Code with experience evangelizing the IaaC approach to deploying AWS services.
  • Strong experience with the majority of AWS services, but in particular a focus on Lambda, EC2, S3, SES, SQS, SNS, and CloudFormation.
  • Experience developing and implementing IAM Roles and Policies to control conditional access to AWS Services.
  • Experience working with AWS Organizations to deploy Service Control Policies and organizational unit structures.
  • Experience working with AWS management/best practices tools like AWS SecurityHub, AWS Config, and AWS SecretsManager.
  • Experience with a scripting language, such as Powershell or Python, and using that scripting language to solve problems and automate workflows.
  • AWS Associate Level Certification, either Solutions Architect or SysOps Administrator, with an ability to demonstrate proficiency in AWS Services.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to work individually as well as part of a team.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • AWS Professional Certification or a willingness to work towards a professional certification within 1 year of employment
  • Knowledge of OpenShift or a similar PaaS offering
  • Experience with AWS Transit Networking
  • Experience architecting AWS environments from the ground up, including the development of best practices and establishing hybrid connectivity with on-premises environment(s)

What’s it like to work at 14 West in Baltimore?

Missing a day in the office at 14 West makes you feel as if you’ve missed out. We have a great group of really smart and motivated people that come up with truly brilliant solutions to the challenges we face in the publishing and subscription services we enable. This being said, the office is totally casual — people bring their dogs to work and there’s work/life balance in that you can work remotely if needed.

Our offices are beautiful. They make up a campus of 12 individual buildings in the Mount Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore. In the summertime when we have interns working with us it starts to feel like a college campus as you see the interns going from building to building with their backpacks. The buildings are a mix of incredible historic homes and some modern construction. We sit in massive open offices that carry mixes of the functional roles; this enables cross collaboration. You can stand up and go talk to anybody, you don’t have to set up formal meetings. It’s open and easy, and that’s how we’re able to move so quickly to get things done each day.

Who is 14 West and what do you do?

14 West is the backbone of The Agora; a network for over forty companies in publishing and direct marketing that exist across 17 countries. The various companies span from Money Map Press to The Oxford Club and the very first of The Agora Companies, International Living (now based in Waterford, Ireland). At 14 West, we are a centralized service provider that enables the growth and innovation of all these different niche companies; internally we refer to them as affiliates. What is the team working on at the moment?

We handle all of our enterprise data. A lot of our focus right now is in optimization and building world class tools for our affiliates. One specific project our team is working is developing a set of new self-service applications where instead of Agora affiliates reaching out to our team directly for data and reports, they’ll be able to source what they need on their own. We are developing a series of new, cutting-edge feed applications where data can be loaded in, reports can be generated on the fly and our developers can understand exactly what the affiliates most want.

How do 14 West employees stay connected and engaged with each other?

A lot of us travel to different conferences to develop our skills and that’s always a great way to reconnect in a more personal way with your colleagues.

We do a lot of volunteer work within the community right around us here in Baltimore. Aside from this, we take pride in having the best holiday parties — there have been people caught trying to sneak into them! We also do a lot of happy hours in the office (employees enter their preferred beer or wine via their Drizly account). 

What can new employees expect?
