14 West, an Agora Company, is looking for a Cloud Infrastructure Engineer to support our growing Server Operations team. This role is based on The Agora’s main campus – where every day, roughly 1,200 people work as part of the organization. Set in Baltimore City’s historic and cultural hub Called Mount Vernon, there is no shortage of opportunities to feed your imagination there. The ideal candidate for this position is disciplined, commands high attention to detail, and has exposure to server, network, and storage infrastructure components, the VMware suite of technologies, and expertise in Amazon Web Services. The position requires the engineer to perform duties primarily in Amazon Web Services across a wide range of services and work with stakeholders on integration between Amazon Web Services and on-premises environment. The candidate should also be comfortable working in Linux, Windows Server, and VMware virtual environments while having working knowledge of and experience with server lifecycle management. Experience meeting deadlines and conveying information clearly is necessary.


The Cloud Infrastructure Engineer will be responsible for the design, build, maintenance, and troubleshooting of public cloud infrastructure and related systems. This position has a strong focus on the server and storage side of the cloud compute infrastructure. As the primary cloud engineer for the infrastructure engineering team, you will collaborate with other highly skilled technical staff who are responsible for the engineering of cloud compute, storage, backup and OS / application layers of hosting infrastructure and internal systems. This hands-on technical role will require daily interaction with cloud compute platforms and their related systems. The key skills you will use daily are leadership, time management, work management, technical troubleshooting skills, technology stack knowledge, problem solving skills, and customer service expertise.

This individual will demonstrate proven extensive knowledge with leading and managing Private, Public, or Hybrid Cloud Environment(s), which Includes the following:


  • Leverage extensive knowledge of the following areas to create and deliver cloud computing solutions to meet client objectives: Enterprise Architecture, Integration Strategy and Roadmap, Service Oriented Architecture, Vendor Selection, Business Process Management, and Systems Architecture.
  • Understanding of hardware virtualization (servers, storage, and network) and leveraging that knowledge to build on existing investments in virtualization and integrate seamlessly with public cloud providers.
  • Act as the technical representative to collaborate with technical and non-technical individuals to provide architecture recommendations for infrastructure in public cloud spaces, and assist in the definition, build, and delivery of solutions utilizing that infrastructure.
  • Ensure technical delivery of public infrastructure components to the organization; Including proper coverage, alerting, and responsiveness to issues; quality and completeness of communication and documentation; ownership of escalated items; and adherence to ITIL/ITSM best practices.
  • Direct and support public cloud infrastructure development.  Participate in the planning /architecture of cloud-based systems and recommend infrastructure to support delivery of those systems, working collaboratively with other functional areas.
  • Research and adapt cloud infrastructure into existing or new solutions, coordinating efforts with other teams within the organization.
  • Plan, execute and assist with ongoing cloud platform migrations with legacy software applications.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of emerging public cloud technologies and their corresponding value to business strategy and product offering. Stay up-to-date on the latest hosting / cloud service provider architecture / design methodologies, marketing and technology trends in the hosting and cloud services space.
  • Assist with the build effort on new public / hybrid cloud compute and storage infrastructure from proof of concept through production launch and ongoing maintenance.
  • Plan, execute, and assist with leveraging public cloud providers, primarily AWS, to provide IaaS for all business units.  Provide the same level of delivery, integration, and support that business units are accustomed to in any requested cloud provider.
  • Design, implement and maintain SAN and NAS storage appliances / solutions for use by internal teams and business stakeholders across cloud and other compute infrastructure.
  • Lead, develop, and maintain effective real-time monitoring systems to ensure proactive responses to public cloud events and maintain up time standards according to published SLA’s
  • Work with internal teams and business stakeholders to define administration and policy guidelines for public cloud hosting, specifically addressing the following areas; security, change management, deployment frameworks, and PCI/GDPR compliance.
  • Utilize the Agile framework to drive deliverables and ensure all work is completed within a timely and effective manner.
  • Provide cost analysis, modeling, and recommendation, including best practices, for cloud hosting costs.
  • Work with business stakeholders to define best path possible for public cloud data ingress/egress, ensuring cost effectiveness.
  • Create and maintain strong vendor relationships. Negotiate cost effective contracts and renewals as needed.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience working in AWS, particularly around the core infrastructure components like VPC/Networking and IAM.
  • Strong experience with the majority of AWS services, but in particular a focus on Lambda, EC2, SQS, SNS, and CloudFormation.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to work individually as well as part of a team.
  • AWS Associate Certification, with an ability to demonstrate AWS knowledge.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • AWS Professional Certification.
  • Knowledge of OpenShift or a similar PaaS offering.
  • Experience architecting AWS environments from the ground up, including the development of best practices and establishing hybrid connectivity with on-premises environment(s).

Director of Development, Cory Chambers knows of this first hand. “My personal story is they gave me an opportunity when no one else would,” he said. 

When Chambers graduated from college, he couldn’t find an engineering job. He felt that no one would take a chance on a junior developer.

But 14 West did.

After he was hired, Chambers was promoted to a management position within nine months. And the company asked him how they could find and coach more junior developers like him. “At the rate in which we’ve grown, I now manage a team of about nine or 10 people and we’re still adding to that,” he said.

14 West also hosts an extensive internship program, wherein 26 to 28 interns come in for orientation each May. The internship program includes big outings such as sailing, team building activities, and real world experience in an elite and growing enterprise.
