Technical.ly Delaware’s top 10 posts of 2017

From medical marijuana to Amazon HQ2, here are our most-read stories of 2017.

2017 was a hell of a year, often not in a good way.
As we kiss the year goodbye, here are the ten most popular posts of 2017, in descending order. Recurring themes include mental health, young entrepreneurs, and, of course, Amazon HQ2.

1. ‘We are on this big time’: Wilmington will pitch for Amazon HQ2 (Sept. 7)

  • Whether you loved or hated the idea of Amazon inciting a nationwide bidding war between cities vying to be the home of its second headquarters, it can’t be denied that it generated buzz, as well as some genuine pride as cities came up with pitches for why theirs is the best.

2. Need glasses for the upcoming eclipse? NCCo Libraries are giving them out for free (Aug. 16)

  • It was eclipse fever in August as the U.S. saw it’s first total lunar eclipse in 99 years that was visible across all of the contiguous states. For most states, like Delaware, it was a partial eclipse that would dim the sun rather than blot it out. Still, eclipse glasses were hot commodities, especially the free ones given out by local libraries. We aim to serve.

3. And the nominees for the third annual Delaware Innovation Awards are… (Oct. 4)

  • The annual Delaware Innovation Award winners, who are honored at the finale of Delaware Innovation Week, are selected by the community. The nominations post, which has a link for voting, was made for sharing on social media — making it one of the most popular posts.

4. Design community mourns House Industries founder Rich Roat (Dec. 4)

  • Tragedy hit the design community of Delaware (and the world) in early December with the sudden passing of typography legend Rich Roat.

5. We can’t stop looking at these vintage photos of Wilmington’s Triangle neighborhood (Feb. 3)

  • Joey Davidson shared vintage photos from the early 1900s of the Triangle neighborhood from the collection of Maryanne Forwood, great great granddaughter of Wilmington builder Charles Forwood. The slideshow of now-historical homes when they were brand new and the roads were dirt is fascinating.

6. Here are the nominees for the NET/WORK Delaware Awards: Vote now (March 24)

  • Like the Delaware Innovation Awards, the NET/WORK Delaware Awards, presented at our NET/WORK Jobs Fair in March, are selected by community voting.

7. Here are the 10 most exciting startups in Delaware right now: realLIST 2017 (Feb. 16)

  • Here’s a popular post from almost a year ago — are the year’s most exciting startups still living up to expectations? More on that later. And keep an eye out for the 2018 version next month.

8. This 16-year-old Archmere student is building a mental health app that could save lives (Sept. 16)

  • In September, we met Shreyas Paraba tech entrepreneurial prodigy of sorts who was accepted to the the Young Sustainable Impact (YSI) Innovation Program — despite being two years younger than the minimum age.

9. goPuff delivery service launches in Newark, just in time for finals (May 3)

  • Shabria Davis chatted with the founders of the popular all-night (well, until 4:20) delivery service when it launched in Newark.

10. The medical marijuana bill that 10 senators refused to vote on just passed (May 19)

  • Speaking of 420, our 10th-most-popular post of 2017 was about the passage of Senate Bill 24, which added a list of conditions eligible for receiving medical marijuana in Delaware. Anxiety over whether anxiety should be an eligible condition had stalled the bill; once it was removed from the list, it passed.
