Sylvia P. Simms, a community advocate and broadband adoption outreach coordinator for Comcast and the Urban Affairs Coalition, was appointed to the School Reform Commission (SRC), the Mayor announced yesterday.

Simms will fill the vacancy left by SRC member Lorene Cary who, after a leave of absence due to health reasons, will not seek reappointment. Read more at the Public School Notebook and the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Philadelphia Daily News has a 2011 profile of Simms here.

Inquirer reporter Kristen Graham tweeted that Simms’ appointment is a “huge zag on [a] SRC that has traditionally been made up of attorneys & other high-powereds. simms was a bus aide.”

The School Reform Commission is a five-person board that aims to oversee and reform the School District. It’s composed of two members appointed by the mayor and three members appointed by the governor.
