A science teacher at Boys’ Latin of Philadelphia won $2,500 at education crowdfunding event SEED 3.0 to launch a math and engineering competition.
Trey Smith plans to launch the Philadelphia Engineering/Math Challenge in November and already has secured support from Drexel and the Philadelphia Math + Science Coalition. He’ll use the money for materials for the challenge, stipends for the teachers and awards for the students, according to his application.
SEED 3.0, now in its third year, changed formats this year, this time including a category for teachers who had an idea for an education project. Hosted by Councilman Bill Green and education group PhillyCORE Leaders, the event lets audience members vote on who should win the microgrants.
12+, a nonprofit that aims to help students get access to secondary education, won $5,000 to open a college prep center at Penn Treaty High School, said SEED 3.0 co-organizer Rachel Meadows.
