Humans of Cybersecurity explores the people and issues in the industry

New America started the series to raise awareness.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which is a good time to mention that there are many companies and organizations in D.C. working to secure data. There’s also an organization dedicated to raising awareness of the people and issues behind the work. The think tank New America is spotlighting some of the diverse parts of cybersecurity through their article series “Humans of Cybersecurity.

The series name might bring to mind “Humans of New York,” and the others inspired by that project. While some of the articles are profiles of individuals, the series also diverts from that interview-and-photo-based format to include articles about projects, work conditions, and issues such as gender parity that are also important to the field.

The series started as an extension of New America’s Women in Cybersecurity project, so part of the goal is to showcase some of the women in the field to allow others to see themselves. However, the series is also more broadly “celebrates stories of the people and ideas that are are changing our digital lives,” as the introductory article puts it.
