Use this free geography quiz software built by a high school senior

Tyler Petrochko, a self-taught developer and game designer, has been working on the software for the past three years as part of a special independent program at Germantown Academy, a private school in Fort Washington.

Memorizing capitals may just have gotten a little more fun.

Germantown Academy senior Tyler Petrochko recently launched an uber-easy-to-use software for teaching middle school-level geography, according to a release.

Teachers: use it here.

Petrochko, a self-taught developer and game designer, has been working on this software for the past three years as part of a special independent program at his private school in Fort Washington. He worked in collaboration with Mark Stephens, the GA history teacher who proposed the idea of an intuitive computer program for geography classrooms.

The program, called “SP Geography” for Stephens-Petrochko, is designed to help educators and students better teach and understand concepts in geography. Stephens, a longtime geography teacher, had the idea for the program years ago.

The pair have been working together on SP Geography for the past three years, and recently launched this year. With SP, users can take a variety of quizzes that best fit their needs. And because SP is open-source, interested users can build their own “map packs” to create custom quizzes — no programming experience necessary. A video with instructions on how to create map packs will be available on the SP website soon.
