BMe: network of community leaders celebrates black men’s positive impact on Philly

It was a full day of events in celebration of black men’s contributions to Philly and the opportunities and possibilities to come.

Last Tuesday, members of the BMe — short for Black Male Engagement — network gathered at Andrew Jackson Elementary School to talk STEM careers and to teach students how to make their own water filters. Later that day, the men headed to Warmdaddy’s in South Philly to share stories about what they’ve been doing to help the community.

Backed by the Knight Foundation, Open Society Foundations and the Heinz Foundation, BMe spans three cities and focuses on empowering black males to share stories about their community work. The local network has a few tech scene faces, including Bruce Marable, partner at interactive marketing firm Defined Clarity, Mjumbe Poe, developer for civic app shop OpenPlans and former Code for America fellow and Chris Holland, Chief Operating Officer at healthcare data company Connexus.
