Baltimore will play host to pitches as part of an internationally-known high school entrepreneurship competition in 2019.
The Warnock Foundation, which was created by Camden Partners Founder David Warnock, is bringing the Diamond Challenge to Green Street Academy for a semifinal round of pitches on March 9, 2019.
The competition, which is run by the University of Delaware’s Horn Entrepreneurship drew students, educators and supporters from more than 45 countries and 26 states in 2018, our sister site Technical.ly Delaware reported.
At the competition, students teams pitch a business plan. It’s broken into two categories: entrepreneurship and innovation.
The competition is open to Baltimore teams, and will bring together students from states like Florida, New York and Pennsylvania, said Warnock Foundation Executive Director Dr. Tammira Lucas, who is leading the Baltimore effort. The foundation launched a high school innovation challenge in 2014. Last year, the foundation played a role in the Diamond Challenge through judging the competition.
“David and I thought this would be extremely awesome to bring to Baltimore,” Lucas said.
The competition begins with a virtual round, then the top 10 teams will pitch at the Green Street Academy. The winner of that event goes on to pitch at the finals at the University of Delaware.
“The tireless efforts of our pitch event hosts truly amplifies the impact of the Diamond Challenge,” Julie Frieswyk, Horn Entrepreneurship’s Youth Programs Manager, said in a statement. “They are true champions of entrepreneurship education and go out into their local communities to share the opportunity with youth, educators, and leaders. We are amazed by their dedication and results.”
For student teams looking to enter a business plan, applications are due Dec. 30.
