DCFemTech started more than three years ago with the purpose of providing support and a big voice for the work of the DMV’s women in technology groups.
The collective puts on four events each year, including Tour de Code, Hack for Good, the DC FemTech Awards and DCFemTech Inspire.
The grassroots events help to elevate the community, but they’ve also grown. And in each case, there’s a new volunteer who steps forward to be the organizer.
“We’ve had amazing women stepping in over the years, putting in a ton of work, specifically around these events, but we now realize there needs to be, for sustainability purposes of the group,” a team that’s involved and committed, said cofounder Shana Glenzer.
Going forward, Glenzer said the collective is looking to have a team of leaders in place. Applications to be one of the four leaders for 2017-18 are open through Aug. 25. A Medium post puts out the official call.

“This will create a stable, structured leadership team who will be responsible for executing on those events and other parts of the mission,” said Glenzer.
Glenzer and cofounder Stephanie Nguyen will still be involved as advisors and provide feedback, but the team will be four separate leaders who step up.
Some of the qualities they’re looking for include prior involvement in the community and experience organizing events, as well as having a vision for the organization. Having time to devote to the role is also important, though Glenzer said the required commitment varies throughout the year.
