These high schoolers mapped crime to find safest walking routes to school

Meet the award-winning civic hackers at the Academy at Palumbo.

The high schoolers in an after school group mapped crime around their South Philly school to determine the safest routes to walk to school. (The project reminds us of a similar hackathon project called Safest Way.)

It was their winning submission to a STEM competition called Samsung Solve for Tomorrow. The students won the statewide competition in December and were chosen as one of 15 national finalists. Now they’re competing for the national prize. If they’re one of five national finalists, they’ll travel to Washington, D.C. for an awards assembly.
