Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day observed, and the 25th MLK Day of Service. For many, that means a day off work — but for some, it means a day of company-organized volunteering.

(Psst, if you’re the last-minute-planning type: Read Generocity’s comprehensive guide to choosing an impactful MLK Day volunteer experience and consider these 12 tips to pick a worthwhile event for both your employees and the partnering organization.)

If you’re looking for something to do to observe the day, there are plenty of community events that involve service, celebration, or both.

Check out five below; all events listed are on Monday, Jan. 20, and free unless otherwise noted.

8th Annual MLK Peace March and Community Celebration

  • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., West Side Wilmington

The West Side peace march has become an integral part of MLK Day in Wilmington. This year’s theme is “L.O.V.E. Communities: Let Our Voices Empower Communities.” The event starts at Be Ready CDC, 1411 W. 4th St., with a street cleanup co-hosted by the Delaware Nature Society. At 2 p.m., the Wilmington Peacekeepers will lead the march from the Dickerson Center to West End Neighborhood House, where the community celebration will begin at 3 p.m.

One Village Alliance MLK Day of Service

  • 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington

Delaware Art Museum partners with One Village Alliance/Raising Kings for a community event that includes information on getting involved with community organizations, free museum tours and live performances.

This year, artist Joe McFetridge will be doing portrait photography of attendees that will be added to a wall of photographs of the community to complement the exhibition “Posing Beauty in African American Culture.” Participants will receive a digital and print copy once the photographs come off the walls in spring 2020.

MLK Voice 4 Youth Fundraiser

Delaware Blue Coats are donating a portion of ticket sales on MLK Day to help support MLK VOICE 4 YOUTH, a statewide contest that provides Delaware youth a platform for their voices to be heard. At halftime, MLK VOICE 4 YOUTH winners will perform their winning pieces.

MLK Day of Service — Blessing Bags for the Homeless

  • 12 p.m., Our House, 614 Foulkstone Road, Wilmington

All ages are invited to donate items for and help fill “blessing bags” to be distributed at the annual Point-in-Time Count on Jan. 29. Items needed include chapstick, non-perishable food items, bottled water, underwear, gloves, hats, socks, sanitary pads and gift cards for grocery stores. Items may be dropped off before the event.

MLK Celebration in Worship (Jan. 19)

  • Wyoming United Methodist Church, Dover

The Kent County church will recognize and celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Sunday, with music and a special sermon at all three services.
