Delaware Agriculture Week, now in its 15th year, is happening this week at the State Fairgrounds in Harrington.
Usually, Ag Week and tech don’t intersect a whole lot, but this year, for the first time, agtech devs and founders will have an opportunity to show their platforms and talk to farmers at the Delaware Prosperity Partnership (DPP) table in the exhibitor area on Wednesday and Thursday.
Technology — both specific to agriculture and not (such as weather apps) has become increasingly vital for Delaware farmers. At the same time, entrepreneurs, such as those from the University of Delaware’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, often have a hard time connecting with farmers to learn their needs, simply because farmers are too busy during the planting, growing and harvesting seasons.
Farmers do attend agricultural conferences during the winter, though, which the DPP saw as an opportunity to connect agtech innovators, many from New Castle County, with downstate farmers. It’s something the DPP — a public-private partnership that leverages private sector resources to enhance business recruitment, promote entrepreneurship and innovation, and support workforce development efforts — has been encouraging since it was established with the signing of its incorporation documents by Gov. John Carney in August 2017.
Director of Innovation Ariel Gruswitz will be manning the DPP table on Wednesday and says innovators and agtech developers are welcome to come by the table on either day to share ideas and network. You can follow the events on twitter via the #DEAgWeek hashtag.
Most Ag Week events and workshops are free and open to the public.
