ChristianaCare has been a dominant healthcare system in northern Delaware since the 1990s, when the then-100-year-old Wilmington Hospital became its second hospital, joining with the large, ever-growing Christiana Hospital in Newark.

They system has grown quite a bit since then, but it was a two-hospital network for more than 20 years — until its New Year’s Day finalization of the acquisition of hospital #3 through an integration with Affinity Health Alliance of Elkton, Maryland.

The hospital is Union Hospital, a 72-bed facility just across the state line in Cecil County that employs about 1,300 staff members and 375 physicians. It is now known as ChristianaCare, Union Hospital, and the campus, which houses the hospital and other health services, will be known as ChristianaCare, Cecil County.

This isn’t the first out-of-state expansion for ChristianaCare, which has previously served parts of northern Maryland and southeastern Pennsylvania, but it’s the first ChristianaCare hospital outside of Delaware.

This expansion follows a busy 2019 for ChristianaCare, when, among other things, it rebranded itself, started a new community investment find and partnered with Medtronic.
