NextFab’s tuition-free NextMakerz program returns for 2018

The program looks to get more young adults into NextFab's community of makers.

Wilmington’s NextFab makerspace in the downtown Creative District has been quite an asset to the community since opening last summer. The Philly-based organization offers classes, resources and access to special equipment like high-end 3D printers and a full woodworking studio, with reasonable membership and class fees.

Still, while the fees make the programs accessible to many, for many other Wilmingtonians — especially youth with few resources — NextFab is out of reach. Which is why the Creative District, in partnership with NextFab, started NextMakerz last year.

Designed for young adults aged 16 to 24, NextMakerz makes NextFab’s resources more accessible to the community:

Targeted to those not currently enrolled in a traditional program, NextMakerz will allow its 20 young participants to learn software (such as Adobe Illustrator) and work with the new digital fabrication tools that are essential to today’s manufacturing processes. As well as enrolling in four specially designed introductory workshops, participants will receive a free NextFab membership allowing them access to other courses and NextFab’s cadre of mentors. With this combination of skills and education, NextMakerz participants can produce a portfolio of their job skills and competencies.

In order to apply for the 2018 program, interested young adults must attend one of two NextMakerz info sessions, held Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. and Jan. 20 at 4 p.m. at NextFab, 503 N Tatnall St.

Adults interested in becoming volunteer mentors for participants under 18 are also encouraged to attend the info sessions. Selected mentors also receive a free NextFab membership and free classes. Click here for more info.
