Giving Tuesday, the post-Thanksgiving answer to Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, is a day to pause and take a deep breath before jumping full-on into the holiday season, and to take a break from holiday shopping to give to a good cause or two.
There is no shortage of Giving Tuesday options, but here are two that will have a big impact on Delaware youth — and, by extension, the future of Delaware.
Two-thirds of the achievement gap between high and low-income children can be attributed to long summer breaks from the classroom. SummerCollab has served over 2,000 low-income children in Delaware with their fun summer learning programs that have proven successful in learning retention.
This past October, the program was awarded the National Summer Learning Association’s (NSLA) Founders Award for Excellence in Summer Learning.
As the program grows, the need for funding increases. For Giving Tuesday, SummerCollab has set a goal to raise funds to cover 23 (a nod to the 2/3 statistic) children for Summer 2018, at $411 per child.
TeenSHARP helps kids without academic advantages attain their goals through challenging college prep programs that supplement their regular school curriculum. The goal is to help underserved teens be Successful, High-Achieving and Reaching Potential (SHARP).
In September, TeenSHARP opened its regional headquarters in the Community Education Building in downtown Wilmington, with space for about 300 students to participate programs such as College Access Ambassador Training.
On Giving Tuesday, TeenSHARP will hold a fundraiser on its Facebook Page.
