What is HipHoponomics? Pretty much what it sounds like — a marriage of hip-hop music and, yes, economics. High-school economics teacher Greg “M.C.” Caskey started using hip-hop as a teaching tool with his students at the Delaware Military Academy, and has since released two albums, most recently HipHoponomics Vol. 2: The Man, The Myth, Adam Smith.
Last spring, Caskey, a University of Delaware alum, ran a successful HipHoponomics competition for high-schoolers, sponsored by UD’s Center for Economic Education & Entrepreneurship. Now he’s taking it to the next level, with a new competition where the top three finalists will perform live at the Delaware Innovation Celebration on Nov. 9 — and the audience will get to vote for their favorite.
The theme of the competition is “Why Learn Economics?”
Contestants must be current Delaware high-school students and may work solo or in teams of two. Students will write, produce and record an original track that fits the theme and upload it to Soundcloud by Nov. 1.
The top three finalists will be invited to perform at #DIW17 on Nov. 9, where they will be awarded $300 for 1st place, $150 for 2nd place and $50 for 3rd place.
