DLHcad founder Darrick Hayman’s passion for tech started with architecture

In 2014, Newark resident Darrick Hayman started his own building information modeling (BIM) company DLHcad, which incorporates 3D and virtual reality into renderings for clients. But his love for technology and architecture began when he was just 12 years old.
“I always wanted to be an architect and I have always been tech-savvy,” Hayman, who graduated from Hodgson Vo-Tech High School and Delaware Tech Community College, said. “I went to a technical high school, so I took classes like computer drafting, where I learned to make shapes in 3D on the computer.”
Art has always been a passion for this business owner, who hopes to implement more virtual reality and animation elements into his construction projects very soon. As a child, Hayman used to draw pictures of houses and cartoons. These days, he likes to draw portraits in his spare time.
When Hayman first started learning 3D techniques, he faced some challenges when it came to keeping up with the ever-evolving technology.
“There are always new advances happening and with every update of the software, there are new things to learn,” he said.
Hayman said he would advise those interested in breaking into the tech field to constantly do research, learn as much as they can and never give up. “Most of the programs are built the same, so once you learn one it is easier to learn the rest,” he said.
He said his drive and determination were part of the reason he got his first job in tech, which was a position with Bear-based BIM company CADTECH, Inc.
“I met the owner of CADTECH when I was in high school and I gave him my resume,” he recalled. “He saw my interest in the field, gave me my first interview, and I worked for him for eight years.”
When asked what he enjoys most about his business, he said likes getting to dabble in several of his interests, such as architecture, animation, design and of course, technology.
