This digital strategist loves old-fashioned pen and paper

Welcome to My Rig, a new column where tech community members give us an inside look at their workspace.

Social media never sleeps and neither does Keri Betters. That’s what the senior community coordinator at Wilmington marketing firm Archer Group likes to say. Betters took some time between creating digital strategies for clients to show us her desk and explains what helps get her creative juices flowing.
[Wanna work with Betters? The Archer Group is hiring and will be at our tech jobs fair NET/WORK on March 30 at 1313 Innovation in Wilmington. Get tickets ($5-$10) here.]

Coffee

I begin, continue and end my day with coffee. I joke that social media never sleeps and neither do I. My productivity fuel, preferred beverage and favorite past time, coffee is definitely a staple in my professional and personal life. I like to have a caramel macchiato or latte in the afternoon.

Planner

I am an individual who loves to organize, schedule and plan. Although my profession is solely digital, I write down everything the old-fashioned way: pen and paper. A few common themes you’ll see in my planner: content ideas, meeting times, random thoughts, doodles and birthdays.

Notebook

Every evening before I leave the office, I jot down the next day’s tasks. Working in social, every day is different, but I prefer to start each day with a plan and a general idea of assignments, important notes and thoughts. A lot of my ideas begin on paper and later evolve as part of the digital strategy for Archer’s clients. When a task is complete, I highlight it as a visual way to see progress throughout the day.

Phone

My second screen, I rarely go anywhere without my phone. If I step away from my desk, I aim to make sure I’m readily available and constantly aware of what is happening on social media. It’s one of the main ways I check to see what others are doing on social, especially on mobile-only platforms like Instagram and Snapchat. It’s also my backup if I forget my notebook or want to snap a photo of something cool around the office.

Headphones

I find inspiration from music. I grew up listening to music, playing piano and performing for others. When at my desk, I often will pop in my headphones and get in the zone of whatever task I’m working on. It also allows me listen to podcasts or webinars while working on other things. A few of my go-tos: Chopin, She & Him, Michael Jackson, and King’s Kaleidoscope.
