Only one garage in Wilmington has a car charger — let’s fix that

If you only count the downtown part of Wilmington that’s east of 95 and west of the Christina River, there are at least a dozen parking garages. There’s only one with a car charging station for electric vehicles.
That distinction goes to the McConnell Johnson Real Estate building, according to General Facilities Manager Joe Antognoli in a recent report by Delaware Public Media. It’s new, too, as it’s only been a feature in the garage for around a month.
That same story posits that Wilmington has a problem on its hands. According to Delaware Sierra Club Outreach Coordinator Stephanie Herron, one-third to three-fourths of the Port of Wilmington will be underwater during high tide in 2100. Scary thought.
The car charger in the garage is part of a larger concerted effort by some in the city to be more environmentally conscious. The big push comes thanks to the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a national, market-based, mandatory program in the U.S. levied at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Delaware’s only one state in the list that includes Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.
