Watch Ashley Biden discuss her new social venture with young up-and-comers

What's Livelihood, anyway? The social entrepreneur and Delaware Center for Justice executive director sat down with Horn Program students for a 45-minute Q&A.

Ashley Biden officially launched her new social venture Livelihood at a big star-studded bash in New York City earlier this month. There, she debuted the clothing company’s tagline “Keep your hood up.”

The motto is a play on Livelihood’s mission to improve under-resourced neighborhoods in both Wilmington and Washington, D.C., but it’s also an allusion to the phrase (and Tupac track) “Keep your head up” and, maybe most obviously, a reference to its own line of hoodies.

“I also thought a lot about the dehumanization of Black men in hoodies,” Biden said during a Q&A at University of Delaware’s Horn Program in Entrepreneurship. “That was a piece of it, to take that negative, horrible stereotype and flip it on it’s head.”

Biden, also Executive Director of the Delaware Center for Justice, sat down with Horn Program liaison Mona Parikh and a number of UD’s up-and-coming entrepreneurs for an open dialogue on Livelihood, social impact, community engagement, entrepreneurship and more.
