These devs wanna break Delaware’s dev community out of its office buildings

“My impression of Wilmington and Delaware is that the dev community is siloed in the buildings where they work,” said Thomas Marks. So he started a meetup to change that.

We’ve told you about Wilmington Web Devs, a relatively new meetup, in the past. But we haven’t gotten the chance to tell you about why the meetup was created, until now. Thomas Marks and Matt Eckman met at coworking space The Mill and realized that there was a need to create a community exclusively for developers who wanted to learn new languages or discuss current language skills they would like to improve upon.
A couple of months ago, Marks started asking about meetups for Python users in Delaware.
“Turns out that it’s harder to find the Pythonistas hiding in our midst. I asked about a lot and didn’t find anyone using it in production,” explained Marks. “My impression of Wilmington and Delaware is that the dev community is siloed in the buildings where they work.” He was tired of everyone telling him to go to Philadelphia for meetups, so he started one with his new friend, Eckman.
But why call it a web dev meetup? “I bumped into Matt Eckman who had tried to start a PHP meetup before. We formed a hypothesis that is was easier to use web development to explore topics relevant to many languages and practices and also give exposure to the different tools out there,” said Marks.
The monthly meetup has been taking place during lunch time but has been operating on a bring your own lunch policy. Most meetups take place during the evening, which is what sets this one apart. The first one was about JS Promises, while the second one was about the Python Flask framework.
The next meetup is taking place in January, keep your eyes on the meetup group to get the latest updates. Or just keep reading our coverage.
