Gov. Markell signs driving safety bill … with Batman

The Batmobile made an appearance in Wilmington yesterday. Here's why.

A bill signing for Gov. Jack Markell is usually pretty typical. The document is printed on a sheet of paper, you’ve got a desk and politicians in the background, a few photogs snapping pics. It’s mostly ceremonial and nothing out of the ordinary really happens. Until now.
AAA Mid-Atlantic has decided to take the governor out for a spin. Literally. In the Batmobile.


In honor of House Bill 302, which fights distracted driving by doubling fines for using handheld devices, Markell signed the bill on the Batmobile. Why sign a bill this way?
“We chose Batman because he is a popular figure among children,” said Ken Grant, the Delaware social media guy who was recently hired on as AAA’s government affairs manager. The idea was to instill these ideas of safe driving in children before they can drive. Batman is the most human out of all superheroes, he has no powers. He only has his wit and knowledge to support him, he is the most relatable superhero of all.
AAA says distracted driving has been a big problem for Delaware in the past few years. Between January of 2012 and May of 2016, 671 Delaware crashes have been linked to cellphone, according to AAA.
