Some good news for developing STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) initiatives in Delaware: For a third year, the Next Generation North of the Delaware Community Foundation has been elected to help fund STEM programs for New Castle County nonprofits.

“These skills are really important in any career field, and the knowledge that students come away with, they can take really in any area … and it’s really important that we’re keeping up with the 21st-century skills,” Next Gen North cochair Lindsay Lancaster told Delaware Public Media.

Next Generation North (aka Next Gen North) aims to develop young professionals into effective nonprofit board leaders.

The organization has announced it’s awarding $16,000 between four different organizations:

  • $2,500 to Nativity Preparatory School of Wilmington for new science textbooks for seventh-graders.
  • $3,600 to Barrel of Makers for tools like 3D printers and computers for the six-part Makers Series program at Delaware libraries.
  • $5,000 to Delaware Children’s Museum for its Junior Engineers program, which is a series of monthly workshops that teaches children about careers in engineering
  • $5,000 to Boys & Girls Club of Delaware for its Beating Odds Studying Stem (BOSS) program, which includes lessons on robotics, computer programming, digital animation and 3D printing.
