How a local tech company is helping power the new Toyota Mirai

Newark-based W. L. Gore & Associates has landed a lofty role: Supplying Toyota with key parts of the fuel-cell technology for the carmaker’s new Mirai model.
Delaware Business Now reports that the Mirai has a fuel cell stack of 370 cells, each of which contains a Gore membrane. (Helpful reminder: W.L. Gore is the company that makes the ubiquitous Gore-Tex technology in your hiking boots and other outerwear.) The membrane facilitates a hydrogen-oxygen reaction to create electricity.

The Mirai just became available for sale and lease in the United States in October.
The membrane production is nothing to shrug at: Laura Keough, the global business leader for Gore Fuel Cell Technologies, said the company is the first global supplier of this kind.
