Newark 3D printer and aviator Joe Otto and his shop, Sovereign Air, have officially moved into Wilmington coworking space 1313 Innovation.
Otto opened up Sovereign Air in May 2014 with 10 printers and two scanners. Now, he’ll be moving printers into and servicing existing printers in 1313 Innovation’s makerspace.
“The dialog for this started back last fall during the first Tech2Together,” said Otto. “Things starting moving forward this year when we came to 1313 to provide maintenance support for the 3D printers that already existed in their facility. Collectively we determined that there was a need for Sovereign Air’s expertise to support the clients of 1313 as well as the surrounding neighborhood.”

The partnership allows Sovereign Air to utilize the existing space, provide support for the existing printers and provide additional equipment and services that will augment what is already in place at 1313. Otto said the idea is to have “full service” 3D printing and design capabilities onsite in Wilmington, providing 1313 members, clients, corporations, students and makers with the resources to “see their ideas come to life.”
“Having additional 3D printers gives us the flexibility to run different kinds of workshops with students and adults,” said 1313’s education and nonprofit coordinator Ryan Harrington. “In the past, we’ve been limited to being able to print one item per group of students, which hardly seemed fair considering that all of them did the work. Now, multiple students can have their model printed at once.”
