Could MARC trains be coming to Delaware?

The extension would connect Newark and Wilmington to Baltimore and D.C., and provide an inexpensive alternative to Amtrak.

This week, transit officials from Delaware and Maryland will meet to talk about extending MARC trains to Delaware, through Newark and possibly up through Wilmington.
As of now, MARC service ends in Perryville, Md., about 20 miles from the Delaware border. SEPTA trains, on the other hand, only extend as far south as Newark. The MARC extension would bridge a divide for workers who travel between states and are forced to either drive or take the more expensive Amtrak.
According to the Baltimore Sun, there are about 6,550 New Castle County workers commuting to Washington, Baltimore and Maryland counties every day. Needless to say, there are also potential tourism benefits for New Castle county.
“Closing the commuter rail gap between Newark and Perryville is very important to Delaware, but without further analysis of the demand for this service it is difficult to rank this expansion versus other transit needs,” Julie Theyerl, a spokeswoman for the Delaware Transit Corporation, told the Sun.
