Markell says most Americans are too financially insecure to take entrepreneurial risks

In an Atlantic op-ed, the governor says technology and globalization are “explosive new variables” that government must help leverage.

Gov. Jack Markell blames national economic insecurity on rapid advances in technology.
In an op-ed published by The Atlantic, Markell claims the “emergence of digital technologies that displace millions of jobs and lead to rising economic insecurity is significant.”
That rising economic insecurity, according to Markell, stunts individual enterprise. “People who are economically insecure don’t take entrepreneurial risks,” he wrote. “And a huge number of Americans are economically insecure.”

At the same time, the governor said these rapid changes and growth in technologies (which he called “explosive new variables”) can be leveraged to work in the favor of the American economy — as long as government is willing to work more closely with businesses. “Long-term success requires an active government that partners with business to ensure that the bounty of economic growth is shared broadly,” he wrote.
