On the Market: Fairfax County is hosting an entry-level career fair with top tech employers

It seems like progress on Amazon’s challenge to bring 25,000 employees to the region over 12 years is already well underway. If you’re looking to make the great Return to Work at HQ2, the company announced last week that it will be hiring for 1,900 positions in Arlington. That’s on top of the 2,100 it already has listed on its site, and more than double the 1,600 employees that it says are based in the area.

According to the posting, the ecommerce giant is hiring for a number of tech and non-tech jobs. Open positions include anything from a full-stack engineer to a senior financial analyst to a global fulfillment manager. Perks include flexible works schedules and mentorship, sustainable buildings, greenspace and the chance to work in a building that more or less resembles a giant swirl of soft-serve.

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority is hosting a job fair this week in collaboration with the esports community. The Entry-Level Professionals Virtual Career Fair on May 20 will include representatives from top tech employers in the region lke Cvent, ManTech, SAP and ScienceLogic, among others. Together, the participating empoyers have over 1,000 open positions, according to event organizers.

“We want to let anyone looking to start or restart their career – from recent college graduates and retired members of our military to parents reentering the workforce – that Northern Virginia is the place to do it,” said Victor Hoskins, president and CEO of the FCEDA.

The FCEDA told Technical.ly that the majority of the open positions are in the tech field, including system engineers, developers, graphic designer, network engineers. The event is also being presented in collaboration with Game Gym and Washington Justice, inviting gamers who are interested in breaking into the tech industry, or looking for positions beyond openings in esports.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced last week that it will be hiring 200 cybersecurity positions by July 1. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas called it the most significant hiring initiative the department has undertaken in 18 years.

“We’re going to be recruiting talent that is already developed. We’re going to be helping develop the talent that is just about to bloom,” Mayorkas said in a statement. “And we’re going to be investing in the seeds to grow the talent of the future. We are extraordinarily energetic about this effort.”

Of the openings, 100 will be official job offers, while the remaining will be “conditional offers” with DHS component agencies. In the announcement, the department said it would be looking to recruit and retain diverse cyber talent across the board, including leadership positions.
