Lucas McCanna is no stranger to the #dctech community.

The experienced digital marketing and strategy pro spent three years at 1776 between 2016 and 2019, where he eventually worked his way up to become senior director of strategy. McCanna has also spent some time working at D.C.-based CuCollaborate, a consulting, software development and digital marketing company with a mission to help credit unions grow. He was a part of helping the company rebrand earlier this year and served as head of growth before departing.

In his current role as digital marketing manager at Kit Check, a curator of technology solutions for medication monitoring in pharmacies, McCanna is consistently thinking of creative ways to promote the company’s work and events. To further his expertise, McCanna is also currently pursuing a master of business administration degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“I think it’s a lot different than from what marketing was before COVID,” McCanna said during our interview on the latest episode of Technical.ly DC Diaries, about his industry. “I think a lot of it is, ‘What can we get in front of someone that’s not an email?’ We need to be more interactive, more fun. Marketing is now a science.”

McCanna is the most recent honoree from Technical.ly DC’s RealLIST Connectors interviewed for our video series, which features interviews with local founders, technologists and startup leaders. The conversations are hosted by me, Market Editor Michelai Graham, and explore various topics including how these folks got their start in technology or entrepreneurship and what keeps them going. See more episodes here.

One of his favorite parts of the #dctech community is everyone’s willingness to stay in touch, though he think we could be more open to tech ventures from different industries.
