Editor’s note: Every week we ship an email newsletter featuring the region’s most exciting career opportunities. We’ve lovingly called it This Week in Jobs (aka TWIJ — “twidge.”). Below is this week’s edition. Here’s the last one we published; it’s meant to live in your inbox. Sign up for the newsletter here.

For the Birds

Most of us may be stuck at home, but tens of millions of migratory birds have started their journeys south for the winter. They’ll be passing through the DMV, which means these next few weeks are peak season for bird-watching — and, just as often, listening.

Keep an ear out for “little peeps, little chip calls, little buzz calls,” Scott Sillett, head of the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, told DCist.

Evenings and early mornings tend to be the most active — a welcome reprieve from trying to display our own plumage in resumes and cover letters.

The News

Guy Raz, for one: We’ve got a can’t-miss slate of speakers lined up for Technical.ly’s jam-packed, weeklong virtual event series Philly Tech Week presented by Comcast. Join us tomorrow for our Developers Conference, and again Friday for Introduced by Technical.ly.

The Developers Conference on Sept. 23 includes a full day of programming with 30-minute tech talks by industry luminaries across three categories: What’s Next, Growth Stage and At Scale. By attending, you’ll have the opportunity to interact virtually with at least a dozen hiring companies, including Ascensus, Azavea, Cerner, Comcast, Entercom, Linode, Lutron, Pinnacle 21, Promptworks, TD Bank, URBN and Vanguard.

RealLIST Engineers is back for 2020. We’ll be honoring the members of our tech communities in Baltimore, D.C. and beyond who not only excel at coding and engineering, but who work to solve problems and build solutions that can change the world for the better. We’re looking for the folks who go above and beyond to guide the next generation of technologists. If that sounds like someone you know, submit your nominations  by Oct. 15.

Face masks pose a particular challenge for people who rely on reading lips to understand what others are saying. Gallaudet University, the college in D.C. designed for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, worked behind the scenes with Apple to choose an accessible face mask for the company’s corporate and retail employees. The masks are being made by ClearMask in Baltimore, and they’re just the latest successful collaboration between the university and the tech giant.

The Jobs

D.C.

Maryland

  • Cloudtamer.io in Fulton is seeking a Cloud Solutions Architect. No need to know the difference between cirrus and stratus.
  • Instant Teams in Baltimore is looking for a Full-Stack Developer to help lead the development of its platform for managing and building remote workforces.
  • Mount Indie — where skinny black jeans never went out of style and “The Queen is Dead” is still the best Smiths album — is hiring a Senior Software Engineer. Let us know if you manage to slip Neutral Milk Hotel or Ben Gibbard into your cover letter.
  • Influx Data is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with experience developing database systems or similar services to help the company build on its Cloud 2.0 platform.

The End

If bird-watching isn’t your thing, may we suggest a more active use of your time? Mutual aid societies in D.C. are in dire need of volunteers. If you have the time and the ability, check out the needs in your local ward. For more ways to help in Baltimore, the Open Society Institute-Baltimore is maintaining a list. Good luck out there on the job hunt, and stay safe!
