Editor’s note: Every week we ship an email newsletter featuring the region’s most exciting career opportunities. We’ve lovingly called it This Week in Jobs (aka TWIJ — “twidge.”). Below is this week’s edition. Here’s the last one we published; it’s meant to live in your inbox. Sign up for the newsletter here.

The Scones’ll Come Out, Tomorrow

Be a friend indeed to these restaurants in … knead. Baltimore bakeries and restaurants are reportedly pushing ahead with planned openings or overhauling their menus entirely amid repeated postponements and setbacks caused by COVID-19.

The bakery Crust By Mack, long set to open this spring, has adapted by introducing easy-to-go cookie dough and baked-good boxes. Meanwhile, newcomer NiHao restaurant is looking into meal kits and cocktails.

In all, nearly four-dozen eateries have opened since the start of the pandemic, helping provide at least some jobs and income — and, for diners, a break from stay-at-home monotony.

The News

It’s long past time to talk about race in the workplace, yet it’s a topic fraught with potential missteps and surely a source of pain. Jael K.D.L.V. Chambers and Alyssa Vásquez, of the Philadelphia-based diversity consulting firm Cultured Enuf, joined the latest episode of The TWIJ Show to discuss how to sensitively, respectfully and effectively talk about race at work.

It used to be that journalists were banned by their editors from participating in protests, lest they seem “biased.” But when it comes to protesting systemic racism — where the only acceptable bias in our society should be “anti” — Axios in Arlington has said that it will bail-out any employees arrested at ongoing Black Lives Matter demonstrations and even pay medical bills for injuries incurred during the protests. An empowered press is a free press.

The Jobs

  • Sports Markit, a management platform for school and recreational sports programs, is seeking a junior Web Developer. The position is focused on WordPress, but no worries if you’re not familiar with the platform; if you already know HTML, CSS and JS, the team will be happy to show you the ropes.
  • Morning Consult is looking for a UX Designer/Senior UX Designer.
  • The [checks notes] “insurtech startup” Pie Insurance is hiring a Product Manager. The company, which is looking to disrupt the insurance industry, provides compensation coverage for small businesses.

The End

Pair your to-go Baltimore baked goods with local art. D.C.-based writer and performer Robin Doody reviewed and ranked the art on each floor outside the elevators in his apartment building, from a sky-blue piece on the third-floor that took the top spot, to a third-floor artwork that evokes “a fire drill, screamed through an open office concept.” Maybe working from home isn’t all that bad.

Good luck out there on the job hunt!
