This Week in Jobs: Love Shack Edition

Amorous Andean bears, jobs and more.

Editor’s note: Every week we ship an email newsletter featuring the region’s most exciting career opportunities. We’ve lovingly called it This Week in Jobs (aka TWIJ — “twidge.”). Below is this week’s edition. Here’s the last one we published; it’s meant to live in your inbox. Sign up for the newsletter here.

Bear Market

It’s a month before Valentine’s Day, but the keepers at the National Zoo are already playing matchmaker. Billie Jean, a 14-year-old Andean bear, has reportedly started spending time with her on-again, off-again paramour, a 300-pound bear named Quito. That’s good news: Billie Jean, when she’s not in the mood, tends to charge at and even swat her partner. But deep into Cuffing Season 2020, she’s apparently become more cuddly — or, at least, open to romance. As the matriarch to much of North America’s Andean bear population, zookeepers hope that the good vibes will lead to more offspring. In the meantime, we have Diego the tortoise, whose assignment to repopulate the Galapagos has proved wildly successful.

The News

There’s orthodontist Dr. Bonebreak, Baltimore arson detective Burns — and now the investor Kesha Cash. But Cash is doing much more than living by her name: The founder and general partner of Impact America Fund, and one of Fast Company’s “100 Most Creative People in Business,” Cash seeks out and supports entire segments of the economy that aren’t being serviced. Her investment thesis is not as an act of charity, but as part of a savvy business opportunity that’s also buttressing underserved communities. Cash discussed her work in the newest episode of Off the Sidelines,” an investor education podcast series from us at Technical.ly in partnership with Project Entrepreneur, a program by UBS. Read on — and get the link to the episode — here.

Tech built in Baltimore is playing a crucial role halfway around the world as firefighters battle enormous wildfires in Australia. Software designed by Adashi Systems is helping guide firefighters through the blazes, plus supplying the best routes to get to the scenes, information from dispatch systems and a dashboard with critical info such as building plans and necessary checklists. Viral video from firefighters escaping the flames showed the system at work — check it out here.

And hey, tech hiring event NET/WORK returns to both Baltimore and D.C. this March! NET/WORK Baltimore will be held at The Assembly Room on March 4, and NET/WORK DC will be held at The Yard on March 24. We lovingly call it the Super Bowl of job fairs. Why? Because the Super Bowl is the biggest celebration of football, and this is the biggest celebration of tech jobs. Both are not to be missed — even if every Technical.ly market’s NFL team is out of the running for the actual Super Bowl (whomp).

The Jobs

D.C.

  • So you think you can do it better than us, huh? That’s great! Technically Media is hiring a freelance Contributing Reporter to help support the team’s D.C. full-time beat reporter. Wanna go deep into the underground hacktivist scene; cover how cybersecurity is changing Virginia; chronicle how local immigrant-owned startups are affected by ever-shifting national policy; or something else? This is your chance to do it.
  • Nava is seeking an Experienced Software Engineer — Backend to join its small teams building scalable infrastructure for government.

  • If you couldn’t get enough of the SAT, your old pals at The College Board in Reston are hiring (a) a Scantron mechanic, (b) an answer-sheet design technician, (c) a No. 2 Ticonderoga consultant, or (d) a Software Engineer. (The answer’s D, come on.)
  • For those looking for roles that sound like a superhero squad: Leidos in Reston is hiring a Software Engineer to join its “Atlas team” (awesome), which … supports automated aeronautical chart creation and data validation within the FAA (still pretty neat).
  • And for those who prefer their job postings to sound like a superhero’s beacon, Capitol Technology Group in Tysons Corner is hiring a Software Engineer — and says “we need your help.” You’ll be building a cutting-edge solution for exploring large data sets and performing advanced link analysis.
