SEED SPOT’s inaugural 2-Day Launch Camp concluded with a Pitch Night on Thursday, where 21 entrepreneurs presented their ventures to the community in a one-minute elevator pitch. The Booz Allen Innovation Center hosted the event, which drew about 75 attendees.

In August, the social impact incubator announced the series of Launch Camps to help early stage social-impact entrepreneurs hone their ideas. During the the 2-Day Launch Camp, entrepreneurs get training on how to formulate pitches, go through SEED SPOT’s proprietary social impact curriculum, get one-on-one mentorship and receive guidance from content experts on topics from legal to accounting.

Three awards were presented at the event. The Viable Business and Growth awards were peer voted while the SEED SPOT organizers picked the Impact Award:

  • Viable Business Award: Scott Bissey for 3 Blocks
  • Growth Award: Erin Athey for Barbershop Embedded Education
  • Impact Award: Tebo Molosiwa for Layover USA

Of the 21 entrepreneurs, two-thirds are female, 48 percent are minorities and 81 percent are traditionally underrepresented entrepreneurs, SEED SPOT organizers told DC. At the conclusion of the Launch Camp, participants are inducted into SEED SPOT’s alumni network where they can receive resources to further their ventures.

SEED SPOT intends to host three to four Pitch Nights a year. The next 2-Day Launch Camp will take place Oct. 26–27 and it will be specifically targeting military spouses interested in social entrepreneurship.
